Who we are

Our mission is to address the many barriers and inequalities experienced by Deaf People, Deaf-Blind people and the Hard of Hearing and to serve as an Ambassador for change. We want to help these people achieve a full, active and influencing role in mainstream society. In particular we want to help them access the services they need and the career prospects they desire, without obstacles to hinder their development and contribution to society.

Established in 1864, MSDP now exists as both a Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee. Find out more about our long and interesting history

MSDP are PROUD to be inclusive. We honour our principles of Professionalism, Respect, Open communication, Unique – celebrating difference, and Deaf first.

A local charity with a national outlook

In May 2023 MSDP became a founder member of the British Deaf Association’s BSL Alliance. The Alliance meets regularly to amplify the views of Deaf people from across the UK, feeding into the government’s BSL Advisory Group which holds the government to account for the implementation of the BSL Act 2022.

MSDP exists to advance equality for all deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing individuals by increasing awareness of the barriers that individuals with sensory loss experience; and promoting independence through accessibility of services and better opportunities to contribute a full, active, and influencing role in mainstream society.

Working in partnerships, bringing together Deaf, Deaf Blind and Hard of Hearing communities to create more accessible and high-quality services to safeguard and enhance the lives of service users and promote independence and inclusivity.

A brief overview of our services

MSDP provides specialist frontline services in a range of communication methods including British Sign Language (BSL), Signed Specific English (SSE), Deaf-Blind Manual, Deaf-Blind Hands On Signing and International Sign Language.

We deliver a range of training courses designed to help improve the way that businesses, organisations and the wider community, communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Through our Deaf Club and regular social events (such as our popular BSL Walking Group) we bring people together helping to build confidence, enable full communication and combat social isolation. Liverpool Deaf Club is one of the largest in the country and is an important hub for Deaf people, the hard of hearing and their families.
